Bolivia - Familia Mamani - Peaberry Honey

RM57.50 MYR

"Upon grounding, the dry aroma presents citrus, grapefruit, and caramel. On the palate, orange peel and grapefruit lead, with plum powder and toffee adding a rich, sweet layer."

The Mamani family has become an integral part of the Sol de la Mañana program, a training initiative led by Agricafe, under the Rodriguez Family, focused on improving coffee quality and yields among smallholder farmers in Bolivia. This program has fostered a strong sense of community among its members, encouraging knowledge-sharing and collaboration in sustainable coffee farming practices.

This coffee is grown in Uchumachi, a remote settlement located 180 kilometers from La Paz, in the Caranavi province, known as Bolivia’s hub for specialty coffee production. The region’s high elevations, rich soils, and broad daily temperature fluctuations provide ideal conditions for exceptional coffee cultivation.

Juana Mamani, a first-generation coffee farmer, began her journey at just 16 years old, buying her six-hectare farm after working on her sister’s farm for five years. At 23, she achieved national recognition by securing second place in the 2007 Bolivia Cup of Excellence with a score of 90.78. Initially, the Mamanis sold their coffee in the local markets, but after the arrival of the Cup of Excellence program, they shifted their focus to producing specialty coffee.

With the support of the Sol de la Mañana program, Juana and her family have significantly improved their coffee farming practices. The program’s curriculum is extensive, covering every aspect of coffee farming from setting up nurseries to selective picking, with strict requirements to ensure successful outcomes. Agricafe also helps farmers identify areas of improvement on their farms, fostering long-term, sustainable, and profitable farming.

For this particular lot, the honey process was used. Ripe cherries, selected for their optimal Brix value, are depulped and dried on raised beds. The coffee is manually sorted during the drying process to remove any defects, ensuring top quality. Once dried, the beans are milled at Agricafe's milling center in La Paz, where the peaberries are separated, creating a new and unique lot of coffee.
