The Lulo Coffee group operates in the celebrated Buku Hambela region of West Guji—an area renowned for producing some of Ethiopia’s most distinctive high-altitude coffees. Their newly established Hambella Bella Station has quickly earned a strong reputation for meticulous processing, culminating in this microlot winning 1st place in the 2025 Ethiopian Taste of Harvest (Natural Category).

Lulo Coffee brings together smallholder farmers from the Buku and Hambela zones, strengthening community production through shared infrastructure, training, and consistent quality protocols. The Hambella Bella Station represents a major investment in regional development, offering producers shaded drying beds, structured workflows, and direct access to premium markets.

Buku Hambela sits in a mountainous section of West Guji, where elevations far exceed typical Ethiopian norms. Cool, stable high-altitude temperatures slow cherry maturation, promoting gradual sugar accumulation and deepening the regional cup profile. A later-than-average harvest window and shade-controlled drying preserve integrity during the natural process.

This lot is composed of 74158, a well-regarded Ethiopian landrace selection known for disease resistance and strong cup potential, especially at high elevations across Guji and Sidama.

Only fully ripe cherries are handpicked and delivered immediately to the Hambella Bella Station. After flotation and visual sorting, cherries move to African raised beds positioned under controlled shade. The natural drying unfolds slowly across approximately 140 raised beds, with frequent turning to ensure even dehydration. Once target moisture is reached, the coffee is rested on-site, then hulled, density-sorted, and graded for export.
