Finca Isabel is situated in the quaint town of Loayza, boasting an average altitude of 1750 meters above sea level (masl), just an hour's drive from Caranavi. Owned by Fernando and Gabriela Calle, they are well-established figures in Bolivia's specialty coffee production, having clinched the top spot in the 2020 Torneo de Excelencia, a prestigious National Quality Cup Tournament in Bolivia.
Fernando Calle, born into a family of fruit farmers in Caranavi, initially had no ties to coffee farming. However, his passion for agriculture led him to pursue a degree in Agriculture at university. Delving deeper into the field, he realized his desire to work with crops that could positively impact Bolivia's economy, thus he chose to specialize in coffee production. Immersed in the captivating world of coffee, he embarked on an overseas placement during his final year at university, where he had the fortune of meeting Mr. Price Peterson, owner of the renowned Hacienda La Esmeralda. Invited to work there, Fernando found himself in Panama, where he eventually met his wife and started a family. Returning home, he acquired a small plot of land in Loayza and established his coffee farm.
Drawing from his experience at Hacienda La Esmeralda, Fernando initiated his coffee farm with a variety of Geisha and Caturra. Focused on quality, he integrated his farm with the surrounding forest, preserving native plants and animals. This approach minimizes the need for soil treatment, allowing the coffee to thrive naturally at high altitudes, resulting in a remarkably sweet cup.
During harvest, only the ripest cherries are carefully selected and transported to the processing facility for pulping process. The pulped beans undergo flotation to remove low-density ones before fermenting overnight. After thorough cleaning, the beans are spread out on African raised beds to dry for 7 to 15 days. Once dried, they are transported to La Paz at Los Rodriguez dry mill for mechanical sorting and vacuum packing in preparation for export.
