YCFCU Single Farm Program : Bekele Heto
YCFU is the largest coffee cooperatives in Ethiopia. Most of the coffee in Yigarcheffe will go through YCFU if they intend to sell it based on price on the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange rate (ECX). Since 2012, Royal coffee and YCFU began a program of separting single farm lots from larger COOP blends. These are “model farmers” within the Ethiopian coffee farmer for others to emulate.
In this selection, we have a farmer from the Banko Gotiti region, Bekele Heto. He is 52 years in age and grows coffee on his 38 acres farm in the town of Worka-Sakaro located in the Southern Gedeo Zone. Coffee has always his main source of income that he uses to support his family of 14.
Coffee in this farm is normally harvested in November-February, we received this coffee in Malaysia in late May 2020. This coffee is a natural processed coffee. Only ripe cherries were picked for this natural processed coffee and carefully hand sorted and floated to remove less dense beans. The cherries is then dried on raised beds for 15-20 days and turned regularly to avoid mold. Each Afternoon, these coffee are covered to provide a balanced drying process throughout. In the Southern region, the midday sun cam be pretty intense. These cherry will be dry until it reach a 11% moisture. The coffee is then transported to Addis Ababa to be milled and prepared for export via YCFCU.
The coffee is imported to Malaysia via Royal Coffee, Oakland.
Upon grounding, the coffee has a fragrance of peach and orange peel. At first sip, it has a sweet an sour flavor such as strawberry, blueberry, grape peach. This coffee has a chocolate after taste which is solid.
