Peru - Flor del Norte

"Upon grounding the dry aroma is citrus, orange peel and caramel. On the palate it is sweet and sour with bright aroma of orange juice, grapefruit and orange peel. In the mid section, it has biscuit and almond aroma. A very sweet and clean texture."

This is a community lot produced by two smallholders from a small village of Flor Del Norte located in Jaen in the region of Cajamarca. The village is consisting of 45 households with a living population of 200 people. One of the contributors of this lot is the #1 winner of the Peru CoE 2017. Juan Heredia Sanchez of which his coffee produced a 92.25 pts when judge by an international Jury.

Both contributing farmers are part of the COOPARGO. COOPARGO has been supporting local farmers that located in the district of Jaen for the processing and commercialization of the coffee produced to the international market. Apart from the two contributing farmers, COOPARGO has at least 280 farmers under their umbrella from various villages, all located in Jaen. COOPARGO was established back in 2016 has been seen as initiator and a jumping platform form small holders from Cajamarca. Prior to joining COOPARGO, Snr Juan has only been sending its coffee locally in Cajamarca. With support from bodies like COOPARGO, fortunes from smallholders improve.

One of the initiatives started by COOPARGO is to change the old tree of Catimor with a higher quality coffee such as Caturra, Pache, Typica and Bourbon. As a result, the demand for exceptional coffee can be met. Both farmers grew up with coffee and have learned coffee from their parents and their grandparents. These famers are third generation farmers, and their farms has been around for at least 50 years. Each farmers usually owns their own processing mill at their farm and when cherries are picked, it is processed the same day. Subsequently, coffee is fermented with water for 12 to 16 hours after pulping and it is dried on a patio until the coffee moisture reached 12%. This usually take about 10 to 15 days.

With COOPARGO, producing members are encouraged to prune its tree at the end of each harvest, to improve plant health and ensure productivity. The assosciation also conduct audit and assess each farm to advice best practice and help troubleshot if producers are having problem.

Peru is the 10th coffee producing country with an annual output per year. Bodies like COOPARGO and CENFROCAFE has been active in boosting quality coffee from Peru for the specialty coffee market.
