Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Diamond Mountain Natural
The farm is no stranger in the production of Geishas and other varietal of coffee. This farm was founded by a Swede named Hans Elliot. In the 1970s, it was purchased by the current owner Rudolph Petersen (also a Swede) as a retirement venture. At that time, the main income for the farm was from the sales of beef cattle, with a minimal proceeds from the sales of Coffee. As the dairy cattle business grew, Peterson decided to further diversify its income through coffee. The Boquete region has a very rich production history of coffee, was a perfect match.
Hacienda Esmerelda consist of four farms. Canas Verdes, El Velo, Jaramillo and Palmira. The Diamond Mountain collection is planted at the Jaramillo and Canas Verdes farm. The coffee varietal of this collection is Catuai. Catuai has been growing in Panama for many years as it is a well-loved for its high production, disease resistance and bright cup.
The name Hacienda La Esmeralda is big in the world of coffee. Eventough the coffee is not a gesha varietal, the producers harvest and process the catuai's the same care as its geshas! That really got our attention to the coffee.
Catuai has alway produce a good citrusy and juicy cup. We were surprised by this coffee. When roasted medium light, the ground coffee gives an aroma of lemon grass, fragrant floral and honey aroma. When brewed, its acidity was not as the typical catuais. Lemon zest, bergamot and jasmine are the main main key notes with earl grey tea like. Flavour is definitely elegant.
