Kopi Rakyat (Sumatra Prestige Cup ACE/COE #8 2019)
We can say that there are millions of coffee producer in Indonesia. Not all beans in Indonesia has been surveyed or gone through a series of audit by any classification society. Who are these classification society for the coffee industry? The big ones are the Alliance for Coffee Excellence. They are a non profit organization that upholds the highest standard in specialty Coffee through their program called "Cup of Excellence".
The prestige cup is the first competition/auction organized by ACE in Indonesia. Indonesia is a vast and complex coffee growing country. Due to its vastness of crop harvest, multi-island regional production and array of processes and varieties it has been a challenge to organize it on a nationwide scale. The best method is to segregate Indonesia coffee regionally.
The Sumatra Prestige cup was a regional pilot in the town of Takengon. In partnership with the local SCA, 40 farmers was selected and audited by jury from China, Australia, Sumatra, Colombia, Holland, Australia, the US, Singapore and Korea. They spent about a week accessing the lots. At the end of the week, the final lots were auctioned off in Takengon.
The Kopi Rakyat was planted by a farmer name Sahmida. The farm is owned by a cooperative called Rakyat in the agrarian town of Bebesan, Takengon. It was ranked as #8 by the jury with scoring of 87.03. The #1 winner won with a scoring of 88.84 (Ateng super varietal).
The Kopi Rakyat consist of Catimor, Gayo 1, Gayo 2 and Ateng varietals. Roasting the beans can be very challenging as all 4 varietals mixed all together with unknown ratio. What we can tell that the Ateng varietals produced a somewhat an extraordinary notes of berry and lemon notes which reminded us by the Guji Uraga coffee that we roasted few months back. Gayo 1 and 2 varietals added somewhat strong almond notes to the coffee and the catimor varietals added body to the coffee.
The taste is more on the lemon-tea and nectar orange. It is sweet like almond brittle/ or in Malay "Bepang kacang" (a candy) and a rather surprising after taste. The coffee has an exquisite after taste. After a while, we would taste a strong pineapple after taste. Just like during Hari Raya when one has eaten a jar of Kueh Tart (pineapple tarts).
