Kenya - Ruera Natural (SLD)

When we purchased the Kenya Jungle Estate, we fell in love with the result of the coffee, mild in acidity, loaded with mango aroma with pleasant passion riped passion fruit sweetness. This specific coffee was obtained in the recent Singapore Coffee Association auction program. Traditionally, Natural process or Sundried coffee in Kenya requires a certain technique due to the high humidity and low in temperature in Kenya.

This is coffee is produced by the a single estate by the name of Ruera Estate which is located in Kiambu. Ruera estate is amongs the oldest single estate in Kenya. Now, coffee in Kenya is process in large cooperatives own factory/washing station. The Ruera Estate is located in a small town called Ruira in Kiambu. Kiambu is a region which is dedicated for the grow, harvest and milling of specialty coffee in Kenya. It sits on a high plateau where the altitude is around 1600 masl. Unlike Ethiopia, the Kenyan farms are actually flat.

Similar to the processes of the Jungle Estate, this offerings is also process as Single Layer Drying (SLD) where the coffee cherries is layed on the dry beds by a single layer to expedite the drying process due to the humidity of the air in Kenya. If the coffee drying process takes a very long time, it will affect the coffee taste and aroma.

This coffee is process differently from the traditional Kenyan washed process. On the cup we could detect the aroma of unriped mango upon grounding. The coffee is syrupy and unlike the washed process the acidity of this coffee is mild and its more caramel at first sip. There are stone fruit notes in the cup with a very sweet and long lasting taste in the cup. This cup is different from the other Kenyan coffee that we have.
