Kenya - Nyeri Rumukia AB
This coffee is produced by the Thunguri Coffee Factory which located at the border with Nyeri in the town called Karatina. Currently the coffee is being farmed by 1095 farmer and most of these farmers are affiliated to Rumukia Farmers Co-op.
The factory is a partner with Collaborative Coffee Source (CCS) and the development of this factory is Through CCS via its Coffee Management Services to ensure that coffee production remain sustainable through training programs, Good Agricultural practice seminars and ensuring its sustainable farming handbook is distributed and updated yearly. Creating trust and establishing with thousands of farmers within a cooperative in Kenya can be quite challenging as the farmers always demand for premium. One of the way was the pre-financing program which was established by CCS to ensure that the farrmers are paid in advanced for them to us to send their children to school or investing for its farm.
Among the 1000 members of the coop, on average these farmers owned about half acres of land, of which 250 coffee tree can be planted per farmer. The picking are done by hand and only ripe cherry is brought to the factory and processed. The factory uses a disc pulper to remove the skin and the fruit. After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight to break down sugar before it is washed again, soaked and spread out on the raised drying tables. The process of drying can take at least 7 days and up to 15 days.
This Kenyan coffee is truly extraordinary from the usual kenyan, while Kenyan coffee is known for its acidity we were surprised by the presence of Cocoa in this washed coffee. Upongrinding, we can fee the aroma of blackcurrants and plum. At first sip, the blackcurrant is bright with the mid section was more toards citrus, with slices of cocoa at the back.
