Los Favoritos is the annual private auction organized by the Alliance of Coffee. It started back in 2013 to show an initiative to show the world the exquisiteness of the coffee produced by Finca Mierisch in Nicaragua. The Private auction was halted in 2015 for five years due to socio-political crisis in Nicaragua and global pandemic.

During the first auction in 2013. The highest priced coffee was paid USD 100/lbs by Wataru Coffee. The coffee was the Washed coffee from Finca La Escondida.

Finca Escondida is one of the fourteen farm owned by the Mierisch family. It is located in small town of Lipululo. The direct translation from Spanish to Englsh of Escondida is “hidden”. The farm is called Escondida because the farm is hidden from the road by the forst and the trees which makes it appear to blend right into the side of the mountain.

The size of the farm in total was 70 hectares and it consist of plant of various variety such as Red Catuai, Javanica, Yellow Pacamara and Laurina. The farm has an elevation between 975 to 1230 masl. Finca Escondida is among the newer farms owned by the Mierisch family. The first tree was planted only back in 2007.

The selected coffee is of the Laurina varietal. It’s a rather rare and the variety is naturally low in caffeine. Laurina is a dwarf form of bourbon and originally from the island or Reunion. It was brought in to the Reunion island by the French Mission from Port of Mokha. Usually, an arabica coffee contains 1.2% of caffein in it and the Laurina Variety has only 0.45% of caffein content. The Laurina variety is almost vanished. Back in the mid 1800, it was far more profitable to plant sugarcane.

This coffee is processed as washed coffee. The selected cherries if first depulp and fermented with water for 36 hours. The coffee is then washed with clean water and dried on raised beds for 30 days.
This coffee did surprise us on the cup. The ground aroma was Hazelnut, cocoa and orange peel. At first sip, orange peel, hazelnut with mild honey aroma. In mid section, black tea like. The coffee is very sweet with an after taste of ripe peach, banana and cantaloupe (sweetness).

Excellent cup.
