Ecuador Hacienda Santa Gertrudis

We recently bought the Taza Dorada 2019 champion beans from MOMOS Coffee from Korea and fell in love with the coffee from Ecuador, its unique and the acidity of the coffee is pleasing.

This is our first offering from Ecuador. Coffee from Ecuador can be quite a catch, we are fortunate to encounter this unexpected lot, unique among samples that came all the way to Malaysia.  This is a coffee from Las Platas, grown on the high hills of Loja located in the south of Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

This coffee shares the similarity of the sweet and acidic Kenyan coffee. Apart from that, they grew roughly the same altitude as the Kenyan counterpart. It sits near to the equator at high altitude, coffee cherries from Ecuador matures more slowly at these high altitude ensuring a sweet  result in their output.

This lot is a collective of coffee from Loja in La Paltas. Coffee in Ecuador is scattred, farms are isolated and small. To ensure cost remain low and being able to sell to the international specialty market, Hacienda Santa Gertrudis has helped at least 80 farmers from Loja to make it happened.

This lot comes from small farms where each producer has their own micro-mill to carefully harvest cherries, depulp, ferment, wash and gently dry the parchment on cement patios and raised beds. Hacienda Santa Gertrudis provides crucial logistical support for things like warehousing and milling coffee for export to the international market, which provides better income for everyone to reinvest in their farms and strengthen their families’ livelihoods.

Hacienda Santa Gertrudis was founded by a Q grader by the name of Jose Luis Equiguren. With the technical assistance provided by the Hacienda Santa Gertrudis, these small farms are able to create the discipline to meet the specialty coffee standards to ensure that their produce are accepted in the International Specialty coffee industry. On top of technical support, Hacienda Santa Gertrudis, provide logistical support, such as warehousing, milling and exportation of the coffee from Loja.

What we have here is acommunity blend from Loja. The coffee has a black tea like body and acidity of cranberry juice, orange juice with slight caramel aroma. The coffee has a fresh flavour with bright and clean acidity.
