Kampung Kiau is located at the lower elevation of the Mount Kinabalu. Sits at an altitude of 1100 masl, positioned near the equator and it’s cool and wet weather makes it a good location to plant arabica coffee.

The coffee comes from a collective of farmers from Kampung Kiau. The coffee from Kampung Kiau is processed at the Ginsos washing station. Which was founded few years ago in collaboration with the Universiti Malaysia Sabah UMS. The whole operation is led by Mr Hanteh together with his father, Mr Ginsos.

The Ginsos Family has always been farming coffee. They own about 20 acres of land which plant mostly the typica varietal. The typica coffee is a shade grown by the tall durian tree within the farm. Mr Ginsos has been farming coffee for at least 30 years and did not give up on its coffee farm until today. In the 70s, 65% of the villagers of the Kampung Kiau Nuluh used to plant Arabica coffee. Due to the low market value and weak supply chain, 99% of the 65% gave up their farm and most of it has turned into a secondary forest.

This coffee is a washed process coffee. It can be challenging to process a washed coffee and we are fascinated by the appearance of the coffee when we received the samples from Mr Hanteh. The collaboration between UMS has improved the washing process of the coffee from Kampung Kiau Nuluh.

Give this coffee a try, highly recommended and exceed expectations for a locally grown arabica of a typica variety. Juicy and subtle acidity of a ripe pomelo juice, hints of smokey aroma. The coffee is silky with a buttery after feel lingering in the mouth.
